Get to know Melinda

Melinda M. Hibbard, tLMHC loves working with children and adolescents. For this reason, she is working towards becoming a Registered Play Therapist. Additionally, she is trained in EMDR and sand tray therapy.

Children have always been at the center of her efforts. For example, in past career roles Melinda worked thoroughly with in-home and crisis situations. This involved a lot of family preservation and child protection. She led a team that was responsible for providing families with the necessary tools and resources that they did not yet have. This helped to stabilize children and their homes. Melinda has also worked in school environments providing mental health services to students.

Perhaps her drive to help kids comes from her own experiences as a child. Melinda grew up in a dysfunctional family. She was exposed to substance use and unmanaged mental illness. Further, she lost her mother to suicide. As a result, she had to overcome a lot of trauma from a young age.

Today, she enjoys helping other children, and giving them a voice. It’s important to Melinda that children can maintain a sense of hope and empowerment in tough situations. Not only does she want to help the kids, but the parents, too. Some of her most rewarding career experiences included active family participation. For instance, teaching skills and coping mechanisms in session only goes so far on it’s own. However, parents can help the child apply those skills in real situations.

Play therapy fascinates Melinda. She loves how helpful it can be in discovering what lies beneath. For example, children may not know how to communicate their feelings about a situation. They often don’t have the language or understanding to talk about it the way adults do. However, play therapy allows kids to communicate through play. Melinda loves to watch and learn more about them from the toys they choose, and how they play with them. She is a proud member of Iowa Association for Play Therapy and is excited to become an RPT.

Outside of work, Melinda can be found doing arts and crafts, or her latest woodworking project. She is a wife, mother, and grandmother, and loves spending time with her family. In addition, she is an animal lover by nature, and especially loves dogs. She was an Arizonian for 22 years before moving to Iowa in 2017.
