Get to Know Skylar

Selecting a mental health provider is a very personal decision. Learn a bit more about Skylar and what to expect when you or a loved one receive care with us at Covenant Family Solutions. Our mission is to unleash your potential.

Skylar Dossey believes building trust and creating a safe space are two of the most important responsibilities she has to you as your mental health provider. Her intention is for you to truly feel comfortable around her as you work together to unleash your potential.

Mental Health Impacts Everyone

Being human just like you, Skylar is not afraid to share that she has personally experienced anxiety and depression. Additionally, she has had the opportunity to support family and friends during times of struggle with their mental health. Needless to say, experiencing mental health issues is not rare. There is no need to feel ashamed or embarrassed if you are facing them in your life.

From her personal experiences, Skylar has been able to gain an inside view of the impact mental health has not on only the individual, but also on their support system. These personal experiences have only furthered her inspiration to help others through their journeys.

It is OK to Ask for Help

Asking for help is sometimes the hardest step. You may feel as though you have supportive family and friends and should not “need” to seek support from a mental health professional.

Skylar shares that after losing someone close to her, friends and family weren’t able to uplift her spirits. Not because they did not care, but simply because grief can be complex. Eventually, she sought help from a mental health professional. Her counselor provided a small light that sparked her healing journey AND her career choice. From that moment, she has been driven to be that same light in others’ mental health journeys so they can be the best versions of themselves.

You are Uniquely You

Skylar understands that everyone is different. This means one treatment approach may work for some and not for others. With that being said, she wants to hear about your past experiences with mental health services — what has been helpful and what has not. She will then work together with you to develop the best plan for achieving your goals!

Laugher can truly be the best medicine. Skylar also loves using humor in therapy as it can be very beneficial in the healing process! Ultimately, she is here to be a partner with you on your mental health journey.

Caffeine is a Must

When you meet Skylar, you will notice that she always has coffee or tea in hand or nearby. She NEEDS her caffeine! When not in the office, she enjoys curling up to watch Criminal Minds, Friends, New Girl, and Grey’s Anatomy (she’s seen them all at least seven times). Skylar also loves spending time with friends, family, and her two cats (Kendrick and Lou).

Mental health medications and a holistic lifestyle can't just only coexist, the combination can be a game changer for mental health.

You may be faced with the question, “Does my child need medication for their mental health?” If your child is worried, sad, angry, or overwhelmed, encourage them to talk to a trusted adult. If they are struggling with things like regulating emotions, controlling anger, or focusing it may be a good idea to discuss it with a medical professional.

While we cannot change the past, it IS possible to stop the cycle of intergenerational trauma and prevent it in future generations. Community support and resources play an important role.
