Covenant Family Solutions (CFS) is now offering free 30-minute mental health coaching sessions to those impacted by the derecho straight-line windstorm that touched nearly every corner of Eastern Iowa on Monday, August 10.
“At Covenant Family Solutions, we are dedicated to walking alongside individuals as they work towards mental wellness. Monday’s storm tested and put that mission into action in a way we could have never predicted,” states CFS CEO Dr. Jacob Christenson. “When the roof was blown off of the KinderCare Learning Center near our Marion location, our team jumped into action to support their staff and children in their care, while our office was temporarily transformed into a childcare center to keep the children safe while parents were notified. Now, that the reality of the storm and its path of destruction has begun to set in, we know that it is our responsibility to continue to help those needing support.”
It is known that survivors of natural disasters, like the one experienced across Iowa on Monday, have a 30 to 40 percent chance of suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One thing that can be done to counteract the long-term mental health effects of a disaster is to seek help early and to talk about the experience with professionals that are trained to help.
The intent of the coaching sessions is to provide an opportunity for people to decompress and begin to process the events of the past few days, while receiving tools to help navigate the crisis. CFS is offering the free coaching sessions to anyone in the community that would like additional support. Individuals wanting to take advantage of this opportunity can do so by calling 319-261-2292.
