Is Telehealth right for me?

By Lauren Wood, MA, LMFT

Telehealth is extremely convenient and may help patients to feel private and more comfortable in sessions. Hooray, no more awkward feelings about bumping into your neighbor in the waiting room! Telehealth also allows patients in rural and underserved areas to see a provider without an hour or more drive.

Capable of managing technology? Like the idea of receiving therapy from the comfort of home? Teletherapy may be right for you.

Thanks to technology, patients today have access to their medical records, statements and test results online. They can also email their providers instead of playing phone tag. Not only is this convenient and efficient, it also gives patients more control over their personal healthcare.

Like these other healthcare technology gains, teletherapy is quickly gaining in popularity. You may have seen commercials on television lately advertising 1-800 numbers to connect to a counselor through your smartphone. But do your homework before choosing teletherapy to serve your mental health needs. Make sure you are getting services from licensed and board certified professional.

Telehealth allows patients the opportunity to speak with their therapist via laptop, phone or tablet. The advantages to this are numerous. Telehealth is convenient and may help patients to feel their sessions are private and more comfortable. No more awkward feelings about bumping into your neighbor in the waiting room! Telehealth also allows patients in rural and underserved areas to see a provider without an hour or more drive. Saving gas and time, it can also help patients save money while still receiving the same level of care.

Telehealth is great choice for patients who are comfortable with technology, and not experiencing severe symptoms. For those looking for a convenient and flexible therapy option to fit into their busy schedule. However, please take note, teletherapy is not recommended for people who are actively suicidal, homicidal, or are at high risk. Likewise, this service is more successful with individual therapy than relationship therapy.

Get direction for your life!

Mental health medications and a holistic lifestyle can't just only coexist, the combination can be a game changer for mental health.

You may be faced with the question, “Does my child need medication for their mental health?” If your child is worried, sad, angry, or overwhelmed, encourage them to talk to a trusted adult. If they are struggling with things like regulating emotions, controlling anger, or focusing it may be a good idea to discuss it with a medical professional.

While we cannot change the past, it IS possible to stop the cycle of intergenerational trauma and prevent it in future generations. Community support and resources play an important role.
