Get to Know Jacob

Selecting a mental health provider is a very personal decision. Learn a bit more about Jacob and what to expect when you or a loved one receive care with us at Covenant Family Solutions. Our mission is to unleash your potential.

Dr. Jacob Christenson founded Covenant Family Solutions in 2013 to meet the need for an organization that focuses on providing high quality behavioral health care services designed to strengthen families. Before moving to Iowa, Dr. Christenson worked for four years as a wilderness therapist at Aspen Achievement Academy in Utah. While working at Aspen Dr. Christenson served in the Utah National Guard and was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

In 2011 he finished his work with Aspen and accepted a position as an assistant professor in the Marriage and Family Therapy Program at Mount Mercy University. While serving in that position he helped the program to receive national accreditation and served as the Clinical Director for the Olson Marriage and Family Therapy Clinic. By the end of 2017 it was clear that Covenant would require his full attention even though he had achieved the rank of Associate Professor and been tenured just the previous year. In 2018 he left Mount Mercy University to manage Covenant fulltime.

Throughout his career Dr. Christenson has been active in research and service to his profession. He has published more than 15 peer reviewed journal articles, two magazine articles, and one book. He has served on the editorial board for the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy and Contemporary Family Therapy and been a post hoc reviewer for other journals as well. He served as a board member with the Utah Association for Marriage and Family Therapy and as the president of the Iowa Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. Dr. Christenson has also provided services as a consultant for Northcentral University and developed two of their courses in the marriage and family therapy program. He has been practicing in the field of marriage and family therapy for over 15 years and is a Clinical Fellow and Approved Supervisor in the Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.

Get Direction for Your Life!

Find inspiration on your path to mental wellness. Please note, these articles are not a replacement for personal medical advice.

How do you know if your child might have ADHD or if their behavior is typical, albeit a bit overly energetic? The answer is you don’t have to know. Parents and caregivers are not expected to know everything about their children.

When you are suffering from poor sleep hygiene, the impacts can be felt in every part of your life. It is much harder to manage emotions and think clearly when you are tired all the time.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Whether it’s from a friend, family member, trusted colleague or a professional, people are out there to help.
